Whats Up With HoD

August has come to a much anticipated end and the hunting seasons are right around the corner.  The HoD field crew has been in the field hanging treestands checking trail cams and scouting for the early goose and teal seasons.  Prospects look great on all fronts.  Some really nice bucks have been glassed in the bean fields and with blue wing teal numbers up by 50% from last year......It looks good!  Only a couple days left until a whole year of hunting kicks off.  We all can't wait!

September:

Sept 1

The dawn of Sept 1 found crew members Nick, Jason, Ken, Josh and James behind the camera, set up on a strip cut in Southern Illinois waiting for honkers.  Shortly after leagal shooting light the geese started showing up and a four man limit hit the water by 8:00 am.  James captured some great footage which will be posted ASAP.  We're going to rest the lake for a few days and try it again soon.

Sept 3

The first Saturday in September had the HoD crew split into two groups.  Nick and Bryn joined Drew Lohman and company on a small cattle pasture for more honkers while Ken spent the night on public ground holding the opening day teal hole. 

The cattle pond, though previously holding around 75 geese, only gave up 3 geese this morning.  Proving once again that early season local geese change their paterns often and for seemingly no reason.  We did manage to get good video footage of the one bunch we had as well as a young labs first few retrieves. 

As for Ken, Jason, Tim and John, the teal hunt yielded 7 blue wings.  Not the highest kill, but 6 of the 7 were rained out of a nice bunch of around 30 birds that settled right in the pocket before the guns spoke.  James layed down some fantastic video footage of the 30 group as well as a single killed in the decoys.  The video will posted soon!

 Sept 5

Went back to the same hole we have been hunting the last few days.  Action remained steady but nothing to write home about.  Hunts have been averaging 6-10 birds.  The shooting however has been in classic blue wing style....Up Close!  All our shots have been right in the hole, and few if any of the small bunches make it out!  Gonna go back to work for a couple days and hit it again at the end of the week.  The few birds we did shoot made more great video footage.

 Andrew Brandt, nephew of HoD staffer Tim Robert puts the first deer on the ground in front of the HoD camera.  A well placed shot at 15 yards put the 8 pointer on the ground for Drew's bigest buck so far.  Way to Go Drew!
